Daniel Tamayo. Fabulario

Daniel Tamayo (Bilbao, 1951) was one of the original group of students at the University of the Basque Country’s Fine Arts Faculty, where he now teaches. Beginning his career in the late seventies, Tamayo was influenced by the Pop movement and several leading names in the contemporary Spanish art world, such as Luis Gordillo. What we might call his figurative code has been marked by a taste for geometric drawing, “objectual” form and intense colours in smooth, flat inks. The exhibition is to include 20-plus medium and large-scale paintings the artist produced between the year 2000 and 2010, most of which have not been seen in public before. Favouring theatrical and stage themes, and despite the scale of the paintings and the use of oils, the works are perhaps most closely related to Tamayo’s fantasy watercolours.
