The garden at Beraun, so close at hand, became an habitual motif, and he eventually painted all of it: flowers, hen coops and, as here, the market garden, at different times of day and in a remarkable variety of atmospheric effects. The low perspective of Cabbages enables him to emphasize the central role of a motif that, like almost all of Salís's, is not in itself transcendent and in which the really important thing is the light. The sheds seen in the background housed the carpenter's shop run by the father of painter Gaspar Montes Iturrioz, one of Salís's disciples. (Mikel Lertxundi)
