The online collection and picture sale

Regoyos, who felt profound friendship and admiration for the painter James Abbot McNeill Whistler, took advantage of his 1885 journey to London to visit the American painter's studio. He thus became very familiar with his works, the way he planned his paintings and his technique. During his sojourn in London, he painted several important works, including this Portrait of Miss Jeanning, which reveals the influence of the American master.

This oil painting, which currently measures 65.5 x 85.5 cm, originally measured 140 x 100 cm. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing the reasons the author trimmed it, nor has it been possible to locate a photograph of the original work, in which, judging from its dimensions, the lady must have been portrayed full-body and the room must have been larger.

The reduction in size has not prevented the work from retaining all its original appeal and quality. The painting clearly shows Whistler's influence in its theme by presenting a portrait of a lady using a mirror in a setting which contains the Orientalist decorative touches that Whistler used so successfully in many of his works. Standout features include the paleness of the lady, which the painter clearly wanted to highlight, which contrasts with the tones of her clothing and hat and the brown of the furniture. On the other hand, it is important to note that the blurred image in the mirror is specific enough to define the lady's face, just as in Whistler's works.

We do not know the identity of the sitter, how and when Regoyos met her or whether or not she was Whistler's model. We have only been able to learn her name, Miss Jeanning, because Regoyos gave this name to one of the exhibitions in which she appeared. In this sense, another title given to this work, The Woman before the Mirror, did not come from Regoyos: the painter's family gave it this name after his death. (Juan San Nicolás)
