Asarta paid special attention to drawing and the use of subdued naturalist colours, in line with the fin-de siècle aesthetic, and to the familiar dark palette of the Spanish tradition. Although particularly attracted to the portrait, he also left some magnificent examples of popular scenes, landscapes and the genre of the still life, with the occasional incursion into historical painting. His association with the coast of Bizkaia and the local people, in particular around the fishing port of Ondarroa, began in 1903 or thereabouts. A number of paintings of his featuring almost exclusively men and women of the sea, and the places where they lived and worked and waited date from between then and 1906. The three works included here come from this period.

The most complex of the three, Pickling Factory, shows the inside of a fish-pickling factory. Six women are at work, while a seventh, in a rest period, suckles a child. The way the figures are distributed points up the depth of the scene, particularly through the diagonal running from the basket of fish in the foreground to the door at the back, and recalls the Velázquez of The Tapestry Weavers. Another major feature is how natural both gesture and attitude seem, as is the recreation of the atmosphere of damp and saltpetre. The light is vital in capturing the forms, and the artist conveys the sensation of a snapshot image. The contrast between motherhood and the harsh working conditions at the factory gives the picture its emotional intensity. (Ignacio Urricelqui)
