The online collection and picture sale

It is permissible to hypothetically identify the painting as the "quadro di Giobbe di Piovera (Job of Piovera [Piola] painting)" that appears in the inventory of goods belonging to the late Gio [Giovanni] Stefano Perrazo compiled in Genoa in July 1668. The rarity of the subject and the estimated value of 120 lire, a sum corresponding to a large canvas, make this identification hypothesis possible. When the painting came to the museum in 1923, it was attributed to Giovanni Lanfranco. It was then traced back to Piola after the signature was found.

Job's hands eloquently gesture as his gaze is raised. He helplessly witnesses the death of his children buried under their collapsed home, brought down by a sudden, violent wind sent by Satan in order to test the resistance of his faith (Job 1:18-21). Dynamic diagonals created by the lifeless bodies of the young men amongst the rubble as the tormented figure of Job stands isolated on the left to contemplate the painful scene in solitude. This layout recalls the Lombard models, but also Gioacchino Assereto's naturalism, especially the typological element of the becloaked messenger informing Job of the massacre.

The foreshortened figure of the beautiful nude young man in the foreground draws from multiple references: Perin del Vaga's fall of the giants in Palazzo del Principe (which according to his biographer Carlo Giuseppe Ratti, was studied by Domenico as a young man); and the trampled bodies in the Battle of Saint James by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, both in the earlier Genoan collection of Giovan Carlo Doria, or the version made by Il Grechetto for the oratory of San Giacomo della Marina. In 1647, in that same Genoan church, Piola was finishing his Martyrdom and Glory of Saint James, a large canvas depicting a complex and spectacular composition following the example of Procaccini and Rubens.

A purely Lombard inspiration also dominates the technique, principally in the salience, achieved by raised brushstrokes, of forceful points of colour and light, whose maximum expression is reached in the lights that fall on Job's shoulder, the draping, the scattered objects and the lifeless body of the young man in the foreground depicted with precious lividity. The plastic rendering of the anatomy shows the attention taken in the drawing phase. The text that follows the painter's name ("D PIOLA|A.NR.XX.II") has been correctly interpreted as a reference to the age: the work has been dated to 1650 which would indeed fit perfectly.
