• In Bathers Urrutia returns to a traditional theme in painting, largely ignored by Basque artists, except for Arteta, who became interested in the subject after Urrutia. Here, three monumental figures are portrayed in an undefined setting that scarcely seems capable of containing them. Despite the bathers being the subject, the painter has introduced iconographic elements associated with classical portrayals of the three Graces, such as the mirror in which one of the girls looks at herself, and the apples in the basket at their feet. The physique of the three adolescents, robust and sculptural, replete with smooth, rounded curves, matches the type of Noucentisme beauty D'Ors argued for in his book La ben plantada (1911): a small head, wide nape, small breasts, high waist, rotund hips and waist, rounded knees and broad ankles. The use of a cold colour range, the importance given to the drawing and the use of the light to accentuate volume and give geometric rigour to the forms, also link this work to post-Cézanne developments in the work of Vázquez Díaz and Arteta in the 1920s.
