In 1900 he began an artistic journey around Brittany and Holland in search of new motifs. The works he produced in the next two years constitute one of the most interesting contributions to Basque painting, with some rather exotic themes that, certainly with regard to the Breton part, had been frequently dealt with in French art since the mid-19th century. In 1902, with the long campaign over, he exhibited eighteen of these paintings at his Madrid studio, including Bad Weather. Holland. The work displays several of the typical features to be found in other Northern port scenes he produced, including the taste for grey inks and leaden skies, the views against the light that pick out the shapes of the fishermen and the silhouettes of the vessels, and the sinuously elegant line of the sails and their reflections. On his return, he ventured into decorative painting for institutional buildings with the execution of two ceilings for the Bizkaia Provincial Council's Hall (1905), work he continued with the ceilings for the Courthouse (Palacio de Justicia) (1924) and the Naval Ministry (1926-1928), both in Madrid, where he also decorated several private residences.
