The online collection and picture sale

This work by Pere Nicolau is a good example of the international Gothic style and shows its hallmarks: stylised shapes, meticulous descriptions of the details and textures, and bright colours. It also stands out for its extraordinary decorativeness and strong narrative nature. The compositions are symmetrical, but they are enlivened by diagonal lines in the architecture, which is only schematically depicted. The way the physiognomies are portrayed -wide foreheads, round eyes, small noses illuminated with glimmers of light- is highly characteristic of this artist. Today the colour of the Virgin's cloak, which was originally brighter, seems dull in some passages due to the deterioration of the pigment. Nonetheless, the balanced alternation of reds, greens and blues makes the panel quite visually striking.

The predella shown here contains nine scenes that share a single wooden support. They are framed by semicircular arches, which are polylobate in the intrados, with small rosettes resting on twisted pilasters between them. The gilding of these elements extends over the pictorial plane as a background, which is also found in the scenes of the Resurrection and the Ascension. This technique, which includes a surface engraving, is common in Gothic painting and is used to highlight the divine nature of the iconography depicted. Regarding the background, all the figures appear against landscapes of trees and rocks which follow a similar scheme and are described schematically with sinuous, ringed brushstrokes for the trunks and branches and zigzag lines. These techniques, along with the colour alternations of the rocks -grey, green and pink- reinforce the rhythmic effect of the whole and provide the predella with a sense of continuity.

Eight figures -male and female saints and archangels- not all of whose iconography is clear, are placed on either side, looking towards the central scene, where Christ appears emerging from the grave held by an angel. In the group on the left, the two female saints depicted have been identified as Saint Bridget, because of her visions of the Virgin, and Saint Gertrude, because of the contemplation of the Incarnation of Jesus in Mary, themes that are associated with the meaning of this altarpiece. However, they are both bearing identical attributes a book and a rosary, which makes it more difficult to identify them with certainty. Also on this side are Saint Jerome as the father of the Latin Church, wearing his cardinal's garb and holding a small temple, and the archangel Saint Michael slaying the devil. In the group on the right, the archangel of the Annunciation, Saint Gabriel, appears, along with another female saint whose attributes lead to the sole conclusion that she is Saint Elizabeth, pregnant and the mother of Saint John the Baptist, who is depicted next clad in the camel pelt that identifies him. The composition concludes with Mary Magdalene, who is depicted in full profile wearing a red cloak and showing the pot of unguents in her left hand. [José Luis Merino Gorospe]
