New recognition of the Bilbao Fine Art Museum’s publishing activities
The catalogue Mensajes desde la pared: carteles en la colección del Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (1886-1975) has been awarded the second prize in the Best Books Published in 2015 Prize within the Art Books section
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport has announced the winners of the Best Books Published in 2015 Prize, which was decided yesterday, 24 May. The prize aims to recognise and encourage book publishing and this year an expert jury assessed 123 titles in six categories: Art, Bibliography, Facsimiles, Children's and Young People's Books, and General and Informational Books.
The prize, which is not accompanied by a financial award, is extremely prestigious in terms of recognition of merit in the publishing sector. The award-winning books will be displayed at three international book fairs: LIBER (Barcelona, 12-14 October, 2016), and the historic book fairs in Frankfurt (19-23 October, 2016) and Leipzig (23-26 March, 2017). They will subsequently be donated to the German Book and Type Museum in Leipzig.
The catalogue Mensajes desde la pared: carteles en la colección del Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (1886-1975) [Messages Off The Wall. Posters in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum Collection (1886-1975)], with texts by Mikel Bilbao Salsidua, professor in the Department of Art History and Music at the University of the Basque Country, was published by the museum to accompany the exhibition of the same title (06/10/15-18/01/16). Thanks to the sponsorship of BBK, the exhibition represented the first public display of more than 200 works from the museum's holdings of old posters.
In addition to a comprehensive essay by Mikel Bilbao Salsidua based on his previous study funded by the BBK-Museo 2008/2009 grant, the catalogue published by the museum's Publications Department had a design by Mikel Ibarluzea of Grafik studio, while the typesetting and colour separation were undertaken by Estudios Durero and the printing by Grafilur, all companies with whom the museum has worked for many years.
In 2013 the museum received the same award, albeit a third prize, for the catalogue Goya. Estampas de invención. Caprichos, Desastres, Tauromaquia y Disparates [Goya. Prints of Invention. Caprichos, Disasters, Tauromachy and Follies], published to accompany the exhibition of prints by the Aragonese master (11/06/12-23/09/12).
