Organised by the Cervantes Institute, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), Etxepare Euskal Institutua and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the exhibition assembles a representative set of works from the painter's oeuvre34 paintings, 10 lithographs and around 180 photographs and photocollageswhich were chosen by Alicia Chillida, an art historian and independent curator and the artist's daughter. The works come from the family and other private and public collections and encompass an extensive timeframe spanning from 1950 until 2007.
The exhibition also includes La idea del Norte (The Idea of the North, 2016), directed by Alicia Chillida and Benito Macías. The 40-minute film explores the painter's creative process and his capacity to observe the motifs he drew from the landscapesky, sea, sand, forestswhich repeatedly interested him throughout his entire career.
On the occasion of the exhibition, argitalpen bata publication was issuedin Basque, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanesewhich includes an introduction by Alicia Chillida and an epilogue by Miguel Zugaza and revisits texts by the poets José Ángel Irigaray and Gabriel Celaya, the painter Antonio Saura and the historian and art critic Francisco Calvo Serraller.
The exhibition opens on Tuesday 9 November at the Cervantes Institute in Paris, where it will remain until 5 March 2022, whereupon it will travel to the Institute's centres in Rome (March-June 2022) and Tokyo (JulyOctober 2022) and then conclude its travels at the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum in 2023.
