From Surrealism to Fantasy Film

Vicente Ameztoy rendered his particular representation of the dreamworld in landscapes and figurative portraits whose scenes feature strange creatures with unusual attributes. The atmosphere of his paintings, which boast a surrealism that is difficult to pigeonhole, inspired Julio Medem in the settings of his film Cows (1992), in which Ameztoy himself assisted with the artistic creation.

This film series organised by director and scriptwriter Julián Bakedano brings together five films associated with surrealism or fantasy realism which somehow resemble Ameztoy's universe. It opens with the aforementioned Medem film, which is followed by the works of other international filmmakers like Luis Buñuel, Jean Cocteau, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini and Alejandro Jodorowski.
