Midsummer Night’s dreamApril, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th (spanish), 15th and 16th (basque), 2016William Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, with an extraordinary cast of Basque actors and directed by Pablo Viar is a production commissioned by the Arriaga Theatre. The feast night of Saint John enjoys a justified reputation as being prodigious. Shakespeare set his comedy “Midsummer Night’s dream” on that very night. Set in an imaginary Athens, whilst Duke Theseus counts the hours until his wedding to Hippolyta, we learn about the amorous entanglements of a group of youths who love the ones who despise them and despise the ones who love them. To make matters even more convoluted, Oberon, King of the fairies, and Titiana, the Queen, in their disputes, scatter spells around the woods where they all seek refuge, and where a company of amateur players is preparing a performance. The stage is set for the night to make strange bedfellows of these characters, who all end up yearning to embrace a body other than the one they proclaimed to adore during the day. As the Sun rises and everyone wonders what has happened, Shakespeare, pious and ironic, answers that nothing at all has happened, it was all just a dream. |

La corte de faraónDecember 12th, 13th, 18th and 19th, 2015 – FINISHEDThe Arriaga Theatre is putting on a hilarious production of this operetta, with the excellent score by Vicente Lleó and the libretto by Perrín and Palacios, damned at the time as being “smutty”, directed by Emilio Sagi with stage design by Daniel Bianco. Joseph, Jacob’s favourite son, is sold by his brothers as a slave to the Egyptians, enriching the meaning of the word Cainite. The poor young Joseph ends up in the house of Putifar who suffers a severe erectile dysfunction, much to the desperation of his passionate wife Lota. Her attempts to calm her passions with the young slave endanger the possibility of Joseph continuing to be called “Joseph the chaste” without falling into a lie. With such a story, you can see why Franco’s censors banned this “biblical operetta”. |
