Retrato del Marqués de Leganés

Room 9

The exceptional talent of Van Dyck (Amberes, 1598 – London, 1641) as a portrait artist comes out in this work in which the elegant posture and direct look of the subject emphasize his hard personality. The face, which is painted with the Flemish technique with slight blooms, shows an exceptional psychological penetration. Don Diego de Mexía occupied an important position during the reign of Philip IV, who assigned him important political and military tasks which led to his travelling throughout Europe. He was also patron to Rubens and Van Dyck, who painted his portrait on several occasions including this canvas painted between 1630 and 1634 in the Netherlands.

The aim of The Guest Work programme is to familiarize the public with outstanding works from other museums and collections.
