Nicolás Martínez Ortiz (1907-1991)

33 Room

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the Bilbao-born painter, Nicolás Martínez Ortiz, the Bilbao Town Hall and the museum have organized an exhibition which gathers together 151 of the artist’s works.

This is a wide selection of oil paintings, drawings, engravings and water colours, letters and a wide variety of documentary material laid out in chronological order giving a good idea of the intensity of the artist’s work as a painter, drawer, muralist, poster artist and engraver.

His most intimate work centres on a vigorous painting style with costumbrist themes, focusing on the landscape and the people of the Basque Country, which Martinez Ortiz treated with the convincing nature of the cubist style together with a gay, spontaneous colouring.
