Exhibion The sea in art and the art of the sea
From 24 January on Bilbao Maritime Museum (Museo Marítimo Ría de Bilbao) is presenting an exhibition entitled The sea in art and the art of the sea (25/01/11–29/05/11), featuring works from the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum collection.
In all, the exhibition has some 90 paintings, drawings, engravings and photographs with the sea as their central theme. Produced by major artists such as Carlos de Haes, Anselmo Guinea, Francisco Iturrino, Joaquim Sunyer, Guezala, Aurelio Arteta, Valentín de Zubiaurre, Julián de Tellaeche, Antonio de Guezala, José María de Ucelay, Alberto Schommer, Menchu Gal, Mari Puri Herrero, Agustín Ibarrola, Marta Cárdenas, Guillermo Pérez Villalta and Manolo Valdés, the works range from the late 19th century to the end of the 20th century. Some of the selected works also shed light on ethnographic aspects rooted in popular culture, while others reflect just how important the port and the sea have been to the city’s development over the years.
