• Balerdi always kept art informel as a basic benchmark reference, despite evolving towards some heavily formal solutions in the following years, Sistiaga stuck to his guns, as the 1970 work called Vital Action. Homage to our Ancestors makes clear. Here the programmatic principles of the movement are still very obviously at work. The canvas is a recipient-witness of more or less spontaneous physical actions seeking to convey, while eschewing all cultural conditioning, an x-radiography of the unconscious. The bareness of the expressive references is one achievement of the procedure. (Javier Viar)
