The figures of Jesus and Mary stand out over a rich gold brocade cloth which serves as the background and is held by seven winged angels with halos. The Virgin is seated on Jesus' right wearing a crown studded with precious stones on her head, and she is not bowing before him as she is in later artistic renderings. They are flanked by two other angels standing with their arms crossed in front of their bodies, making a total of nine angels in the painting, alluding to the nine categories of angels, albeit without any distinctions in this work.

Along with the linear depiction of the profiles of the figures, the painting shows some modelling, which is particularly visible in their faces, where we see some tonal gradations. Here, the gold dissolves the bodies in space, thus rendering it supernatural and divine.

The compositional system is symmetrical, and the figures are ordered by an imaginary symmetrical axis which would run through the centre, specifically in the space between Jesus and his mother and through the head of the angel in the upper centre. It is a regular and almost strictly symmetrical composition. (Ana Galilea)
