This still life is an evocative example of the oeuvre of Luis Meléndez, a master of the genre both in Spain and in Europe during the 18th century.

Meléndez, or Menéndez, as Ceán Bermúdez calls him, was the son of a miniature painter established in Naples and committed to the attempts to set up an Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. On account of his arrogance he fell out with his colleagues and his son suffered the consequences, for he was expelled from the Academy in 1748. In previous years Luis had been a protégé of Louis-Michel van Loo, the French painter who had been called to the court of Philip V, but this incident obliged him to move to Italy, where he completed his training in Rome and in Naples. Upon his return to Spain in 1753 and after working as a painter of miniatures in the palatial choral books he endeavoured to secure a post as a chamber painter of Charles III, yet his memorials proved to no avail. This obliged him to cultivate still-life painting, a commercial genre in which he attained an unparalleled virtuosity.

Meléndez's still lifes, like this one, are simple compositions representing everyday objects with a monumentality and rigour that mark a sharp contrast with their ordinariness. Obsessed with meaningful details and different textures, he turned to motifs such as fruit, pots and pans, bread, vegetables, etc., arranging them in infinite variations. A number of his still lifes dated from 1750 to 1778 have survived. In this one, the shine of the pitcher from Talavera is set off the velvety skin of the peaches, the smoothness of the cherries and the powdery texture and droopiness of the leaves.
