His painting evolved (at times in connivance with the work of his contemporary Ortiz de Elgea, another leading member of the Orain group) into a short figurative phase in the early 1970s, moving on to a profoundly melancholic, intensely poetic abstract art of heavy, blended colours, structured in irregular blocks of unstable composition, which in some respects recall Poliakoff's assembled forms. This episode led to a messy abstraction of sordid colours with thick impasto, which lets the spectator see how the paint has splurged directly from the tube. Painting is a work from this phase.
