Despite Anselmo Guinea's efforts to be a painter of his time, always mindful of incorporating new languages, he always drew only marginally from his day and age for his motifs. Likewise, on the few occasions when he reflected aspects of the life of the urbanites of his generation, he steeped them in an anecdotal intention. This is the case, for example, of several of the works from his last sojourn in Rome, when he painted a family of somewhat unsuccessful musicians (Travelling Musicians, c. 1904), a marital dispute in a tavern (The Tavern, c. 1904) and this flirtation on a bridge in Rome.

Behind the monumental figures that close the edge of the composition, which also contain the storyline, the painter reproduces the characteristic rosy look of a Roman sundown, in which the sun, about to set, gilds everything, from the architecture to the vegetation. Other sources of artificial light, the lamp posts which are beginning to give off their yellowish glow, thickly stud the surface of the painting. By means of the different plays of light and the use of a fluid, undulating and clearly Art Nouveau brushstroke-perceptible in the human figures and their shadows, and in the trees in the background-he conveys the sense that everything is in motion, shaken up by telluric forces. This is compounded by the rays of oblique parallel sunbeams, the evolution of a pointillist brushstroke with which he captures the atmospheric vibrations of a sky whose purplish tones harmonise with the warm oranges of the buildings.

Two years after he painted Group of People, Guinea died at the age of 51. At that time, he was unable to guess the esteem that this painting would earn as a compendium of a life and an artistic career about to end. Group of People reveals the recurrence of his interest in drawing, lighting, colour and the humoristic anecdote, while it also illustrates the culmination of his career. It dates from a mature period in which Guinea -disenchanted with the way he felt used by the group of Basque renovators with whom he had been involved in disseminating modernity- returned to Rome to try a third way that could reconcile Roman tradition with Parisian innovation.

The legacy of an entire life is somehow present in Group of People, from his predilection for Costumbrist themes with jocose stories, learnt in his earliest training in the 1870s in the Bilbao atelier of Antonio María Lecuona, to the skill of his drawing, initially assimilated in the academies of Madrid (1874-1875) and Rome (1875-1876) and exercised constantly as a successful artist in Bilbao (1876-1881) and then back in Rome (1881-1887). Yet the painting also shows the new techniques acquired in his two stints in Paris (1891-1892 and 1895), when he became interested in Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and Synthetism.
