The online collection and picture sale

Expectation Aroused by the Promise of the Messiah encloses a complex iconographic theme. It is a Counter-Reformation allegory referring to the genealogy of Christ and the redemption of mankind through the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin appears in the upper part surrounded by angels and as vanquisher of the Devil. Below several characters are set around the Tree of Jesse, including, in the foreground, Adam and Eve. Behind them are a number of Biblical characters, such as David, Moses and John the Baptist. Shackled to the yoke of sin, which enslaves them to the Devil, they are, as the title suggests, aroused by the promise of the Coming of the Messiah, who shall redeem the human race from the sin committed by our original parents. This work derives from The Conception, painted in 1541 by Italian painter and writer Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), which Amigo probably knew about from an engraving. This would explain why the theme is shown in reverse to the original. Martín Amigo renders the composition skilfully and introduces several variations. Furthermore, he adds two attractive nudes in the Mannerist figures of Adam and Eve, where he demonstrates his artistic talents to the full. [Ana Sánchez-Lassa]
