A girl about to leave her childhood behind poses facing and looking directly at the viewer. On her head, she is carrying a polished milk jug which she is holding by the handle with her left hand, as her right hand rests on her hip. Despite the rigidity she must maintain in order to properly balance her load, the play of her arms provides rich dynamism to her figure and generates a vertical zigzag. This undulating movement has a twofold echo on the right: first, in the position of the three boys slightly behind her, and secondly in the tree located between her and the boys, whose trunk rises in a repetition of the position of the girl's arm.

Compared to the usual diagonal compositions favoured by the painter Adolfo Guiard, from Bilbao, in this one what reigns supreme is the orthogonality marked by the low wall in the background and the wall of a house glimpsed on the left. The girl's body, with its brass jug, joins the general verticality of the scene. The ship's masts in the distance reinforce this compositional play.

The ground and the middle ground with buildings are dominated by ochres and earth tones, which permeate the lower part of the tree, becoming purplish as it rises. The clothing of the girl, the boys and the old woman leaning against the house range between a bluish-tinged white and an indigo-tinged black. The air itself is bluish, even if it cannot be seen. The light is from the evening, and as it strikes the back of the girl's head, it makes her brown hair glow with warm reddish highlights around the edges. The carnation in her mouth is the delightful detail which captures the freshness, liveliness and intensity of its bearer.

Once again, the drawing becomes the supreme structure, but without an obsessive desire to foreground it. Here it plays a subtler role. The girl's hands and the tree trunk clearly reveal the artist's mastery. The ground, just like the water in other Guiard paintings, is the perfect excuse to roll out pure, almost abstract, colour.

The painter avoids social commentary and melodrama, but he leaves proof of the fact that who should be at school studying is instead doing jobs, minor ones, but which are toilsome. Guiard's children are occupied in strenuous labour, yet they never lack dignity or an undeniable beauty. The scene is set in Elorrieta (Bilbao), a semi-proletarian neighbourhood on the city's outskirts in the early 20th century, located near where Guiard had his studio, amidst peasant gardens and fishermen's houses or railyards by the estuary.

The image is one of the most beautiful icons harking back to the origins of modern capitalism in Bilbao: youth and work, the rural world that survives while losing ground to the advance of cities, nature with its peoples (music nearby) and industry with its trade (background noise), hope in the future which is born multiple times (children) and the uniform past which is about to disappear (the old woman), the natural elegance and steadfast character; that Bilbao which was being debated among cosmopolitanisms and traditionalisms is perfectly condensed in this young pre-adolescent who looks at her future, at us, straight in the eye, fearlessly.

Guiard submitted Country Girl with a Red Carnation to the 3rd Modern Art Exhibition of Bilbao held in 1903, and there it was purchased by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia to grow its art collection and as a way of directly supporting the efforts of the group of local artists who were trying to get the audiences of Bilbao accustomed to seeing the art of their time. That year, an extensive set of works by Paul Gauguin was presented as a tribute to the recently-deceased artist who was so deeply admired by Basque artists like Francisco Durrio, Darío de Regoyos and Guiard himself.

A few months before he encountered this village girl, Ramiro de Maeztu wrote that Guiard personified "tact, measure, logic and good sense. His artistic sensuality is developed in full self-assurance and balance; he knows how to remain in the right measure and reach perfection in the methodical. A Luminist by school, but not enough to do away with the figure, yet nor does he feel such exclusive passion for the figure that it would lead him to portraiture. His canvases are tableaux of compensations: the figures do not prevail over the landscape, nor does the landscape prevail over the figures.
