When she painted Carolina's Terrace in 1983, Gangutia portrayed the home environment from her sister's flat in the calle Ferraz, a street in Madrid. In a family atmosphere, an absorbed, meditative figure directs the spectator's gaze toward the view beyond, a cityscape full of magic and mystery. A major feature of this nocturne are the cold blues, the suggestive forms and the exquisite air distributed with precision and delicacy around the painting without needlessly excessive displays of virtuosity.
