Another substantial change in Díez Alaba's work led him to images that describe plant-like abstractions with gestural techniques, which soon metamorphosed into real landscapes. To begin with, the landscapes appeared to be parodies of Romantic landscapes, specifically of German Romanticism, with atmospheric perspectives that fade away to infinity and which are executed with a delicate, transparent technique. But they soon took on a more Surrealistic look and the style became more Oriental, based on sweeping but controlled gestures that, without concealing their calligraphic origins, vibrated with descriptive intent.
