The online collection and picture sale

The Wrong Moment, probably painted during Zamacois's very brief stay in Rome in 1868, pictures the moment, set in the 18th century, when a clergyman arrives unexpectedly at a painter's studio. In the painting, the artist in question is painting a study of a nude woman, and he shoos the inopportune visitor away, while the young model instinctively covers herself. After his sojourn in Rome, Zamacois had plenty of success with scenes like this one, using embarrassing situations to ridicule the ecclesiastical world. The painting also reflects his predilection for portraying interiors, very much in fashion at the time; it gave him the chance to arrange the various components in a finely balanced composition.

Settled early on in Paris, Zamacois started at Ernest Meissonier's studio in 1861, where he learnt to paint with a studied preciosity. Including scenes of daily life from times past in his small paintings, often with more than a touch of humour, he managed to distance himself from the predominant current of history painting usually designed to recall some momentous historical event. The international-wide interest his work had awakened by the mid-19th century was due largely to a mix of unusual, out-of-the-way themes and the remarkably fine execution, which set him apart from a crowd of skilled genre painters. Furthermore, his contract with the dealer Adolphe Goupil and his connections with artists and intellectuals of the day brought him artistic success and acclaim. (Javier Novo)
